Standing in the light of the Geghard Monastery in Armenia

Geghard Monastery is on the UNESCO World Heritage List and is located less than an hour’s drive east of Armenia’s capital city, Yerevan. I had been exploring the grounds when I came upon this scene, and I took the photograph rather quickly because I didn’t want to miss it.

I believe I captured a moment of spirituality, simultaneously public and private. This person, with raised head and forward-facing palms, was experiencing the light as it pierced through a hole in the chamber’s ceiling. After entering the chamber myself, I watched as others stepped into the light, looked skyward, and took their moments in the sun.

I did, too.
