The 10-Book Challenge: Book #2

Four Theories of the Press by Fred S. Siebert, Theodore Peterson, and Wilbur Schramm

I was already familiar with the very basic theoretical notions of this book because they came up a few times over the course of my education. But how I wish I had read this book sooner!

Even though it was originally published in 1956, it discusses ideas that are still being debated today. The history and philosophical explanations it contains was also an eye-opener for me.

I won’t explain them here (it would take too long), but the four theories of the press the authors examine are the following:

  1. Authoritarian
  2. Libertarian
  3. Social Responsibility
  4. Soviet Communist

These theories were recently reexamined and reevaluated for our current age, and that book is on my list, too. You’ll see it in a future post.

I recommend this book for anyone who is interested in learning more about how philosophy can play a significant role in the development of a media system.
